 One of the most typical expressions that symbolizes autumn is cheongomabi (天高馬肥). Cheongomabi shows features of autumn; the ne of the most typical expressions that symbolizes autumn is sky looks high and horses gain weight because there are lots of things to eat. It means a special attraction and an abundance of autumn. The word cheongomabi originated from Chinese history. According to Chinese history, horses, which were used as a means of transportation by the Xiongnu, were getting fat and healthy. The nomadic Xiongnu were a threat to the Chinese. When a horse gains weight, it means the Xiongnu will attack them. Consequently, Chinese use the word cheongomabi as a reminder to be alert for the Xiongnu's invasion. Cheongomabi has evolved over time and is now just a general expression of autumn. So what are some similar expressions in different languages and cultures?


 In English, there is the term “harvest season”. It refers to the harvesting of grains and celebrating the richness and the fruits of nature. Sometimes, people say “sweater weather”, which means perfect weather to wear a sweater as the weather becomes much cooler. “Indian summer” is a term for a period of sudden warm weather in autumn.


 It usually happens in October or November, and the cozy days continue for over a week. This expression is associated with American Indians in the United States. As the weather became warm, some animals which lived in the mountains came out. This allowed American Indians to hunt easily. They regarded this span as a kind of blessing from a god before the winter. 


 In French, they say “les vendanges”. It means the season for harvesting grapes, and in German, they say “Goldener Herbst”. It depicts the beautiful scenery and richness of grains ripening in autumn.




 There are various expressions other countries use to describe autumn, just like in our country. Although the language and culture are different, it is common all over the world to celebrate the abundance of autumn and appreciate its beauty.
