Do you have any worries about studying your major or studying abroad? Do you want to share knowledge and receive scholarships? If so, the Pharos recommends using tutoring that is supported by the school. A tutor can get a scholarship and a tutee can get help studying for their major. Killing two birds with one stone! Engineering college students are excluded from G-Tutoring but almost all other students are included. However, engineering students are classified as Peer-Tutoring students and can participate in that program. From now on, the Pharos will explore two tutoring programs.

G-Tutoring is a program that motivates students to learn by creating a tutor-tutee group. The applicant for a tutor is a student whose grade in the desired major course is A or higher. A tutee is a student that studies a major related to the tutoring course for the semester. If you want to apply, you can submit an application form on the homepage of the Teaching and Learning Center. Each semester 60 teams made up of a tutor and three tutees are selected. However, if the tutee is a foreign student, it is possible to form a one-on-one team. The selection period is at the beginning of each semester, and this semester it was from September 1 to 11. Once the tutoring group is created, the program’s orientation must be entered and the tutor should write an activity report on the team activity each week. Mid-term reports should also be submitted, and there will be time for explains about the tutoring team’s activity in the final reporting session. The tutee should also write activity daily records and reviews. For excellent groups, the center gives more prizes and KGU points.

There is another tutoring program named Peer- Tutoring that is the same but different from G-Tutoring. The biggest difference between two is that Peer-Tutoringis a program only for engineering college students. In other words, engineering college students can’t apply for G-Tutoring. You can find out the deadline for Peer-Tutoring’s applications through Kyonggi University’s homepage or notification by the application. You can even get information about it from each engineering college’s Kakao chat room. If you want more information, you can visit the Engineering Certification Center or each engineering college’s office. The tutor has to get an A or A+ in the major in which he or she wants to teach, and the tutor’s last semester’s grade point average (GPA) should be 3.5 or higher. All students in from the third semester to the seventh semester can apply to be tutors but students in the eighth semester are unable to be tutors. The tutor should attend the program’s orientation and a special lecture named Method of Learning. Writing a 10-week studying plan is required and an activity report for each week should also be handed in by the tutors.

The tutor has to submit a final report in the last week. When the semester is over, tutors get a 500,000 won scholarship and 20 KGU points. Tutees gain 10 KGU points too, and Peer-Tutoring awards outstanding groups more KGU points like G-Tutoring does.

The Pharos interviewed a Peer-Tutoring tutor and a tutee. Let’s see what the tutoring was really like through the following interviews.

The tutor interview

Q What did you get from the Peer-Tutoring experience?
A I got teaching experiences, leadership training and a chance to get to know my
juniors and my classmate. Above all, I was glad to get a scholarship because it was a
great help to my university life.

Q Do you have any opinions about this program like improvements?
A Yes, I think there are too many formalities. The preparation for my class
decreased owing to the reports.

Q What do you want to say to the next tutors?
A Don’t trust your teaching way too much because you may think your way is
right for studying but the tutees might not agree.

The tutee interview

Q Did the Peer-Tutoring experience help you actually?
A At first, I got into the tutoring to be good in my major studies. I was embarrassed soon since each tutor’s passion was different. I was very happy with the tutor who was good at teaching and passionate, but the other one who wasn’t helped me only a little. As the semester came to an end, I was disappointed because the tutors’ enthusiasm for teaching had waned.

Q Are you willing to participate in this tutoring program again?
A I won’t do it as a tutee, but I want to do it as a tutor. I can understand more about the tutee’s feelings through my two tutee experiences, and I know more how to teach effectively than existing tutors.

Q Do you have any advice for tutors?
A Don’t lose your zest for teaching because it will make your class worse.

Until now, the Pharos has investigated G-Tutoring and Peer-Tutoring. Let the Pharos give you one more informative tip. You can get another scholarship if you write a scholarship essay and enter the scholarship essay contest after the program ends because these two tutoring programs are also scholarship programs. Therefore, you can get an opportunity to teach someone and a scholarship as a tutor, and discover solutions you can't find out alone about your major studies.
