People live busy lives, and get tired and stressed by work and relationships.
People engross themselves in their interests to relieve stress or as their hobbies.
They feel happiness, pleasure, and a sense of achievement when they do these
things. “Otaku” is a Japanese word meaning a person who is deeply interested
in one field, and Otaku people exist all around us. Let’s look at some
examples of Otaku that we can easily see in the world around us.

First, subjects such as cartoons, movies, figures, dolls, etc. easily come
to mind when we think of Otaku It is not only watching cartoons for fun, but
also becoming an expert in knowing all the characters and characteristics
of the characters in the cartoons. Otaku people buy products with the
characters‘ faces, gather a collection of figures, and participate in auctions
to get things. Depending on the theme, cafes are created and meetings
are hold, and people with similar interests share information because this
cultured interest is spreading, the demand for cartoon cafes is increasing
dramatically. Also, figure shops and claw machine game shops can easily
be found.

Second, there are collectors that collect things in their favorite colors.
Each person has a favorite color. When you examine the things you bought
one by one, you will find that they all have similar colors. This tendency
can be found easily around us. Otaku people will buy writing instruments,
clothes, accessories and so on according to their favorite colors. In this
regard, Otaku does not have high boundaries, and we can easily be a part
of it. Maybe, we already have one foot in the Otaku door.

The third one is “CoDuck,” a compound word made from “Cosmetic” and
“Duckhoo.” In other words, these people are cosmetics’ maniacs. The Japanese
word Otaku has been translated in to Korean as “Duckhoo.” It refers to people
who focus on only their own interests and do not interact socially with other
people. It could be a negative expression with regard to social life, but the
CoDuck phenomenon can contribute to improving the quality of the cosmetics
industry and develop more and more through comments and reviews. Also,
some cosmetics companies are said to recruit new employees based on whether
she or he is a CoDuck or not. In particular, beauty Youtubers and Bloggers are
successful Duckhoo people who have high salaries and develop interest in jobs related to the cosmetics industry. They share information about cosmetics and makeup products, and introduce them to others.

Among them, I want to speak about the representative Co-Duck
Youtuber “Lena.” Her show’s name is “Lena’s Pocket.” There are various
videos by Lena about make- up, her makeup tips, and cosmetics’ reviews.
Lena was originally a student who liked beauty, but she concentrated on
studying for the entrance examination and entered an unrelated major
at university because her parents rejected her wish to attend a beauty
major. Eventually, she gave up the other majors and majored in beauty in
a third school. As a result, she made a video about makeup just for fun,
and she became a successful Beauty Youtuber having advertisements for
cosmetics and 80 million subscribers.

Duck-hoo people are present in our university, too. I’ll introduce two
students of Kyonggi University who tipped off the Pharos about their Duckhoo
life style.

I’m a car wash duck-hoo. A car wash duck-hoo is called a detailer. Actually, I started washing my car because I wanted to show a clean car to my favorite female classmates. I became addicted to detailing in Naver
cafes and studied them. Every night, I washed my last car with wax-water plus wax for an hour. The current one, a Mercedes-Benz E-Class, takes five hours to wash. I couldn’t
sleep all night because of washing my car. After car washing all night, I entered the first class of the next day, but when I think of a clean car, I am not tired. My worst day is a rainy day. It’s hard to wash the car when it rains. I would like to introduce my hobby to my fellow students in Kyonggi University.

I’m a cultural life duckhoo. I got used to enjoying culture because of the influences of parents, who like movies and music, so I often visit the greeting
events of movie actors in theaters and cinemas abroad. Also, as the result from my lucky prize winning in SNS contests, I have participated concerts and festivals for free. Rather
than concentrating on one field, I like various fields such as
musicals, plays, movies, and music. Besides getting tickets and doing various activities, I write in a blog or diary. It makes me study more intensely because I reduce the stresses from studying in the academic world by writing the diary entry of that day.

Generally, the perception of society about duck-hoo people is a little bit negative because they usually seem like losers or hermits. However, as you have read about above, there are many positive effects and advantages to doing something with enthusiasm and enjoyment as a hobby. How about being a positive duck-hoo person who knows his or her interest and developing your life?
