Recently, the Kyonggi University Central Library was remodeled. However, there are many students who have not visited the Central Library due to the coronavirus pandemic. For these students, we are about to start our online library tour. In addition to borrowing books, the Central Library offers a lot of information such as books, periodicals, electronic resources(e-Journal, database, eBook, e-Learning), and non-book materials(DVD, CD-ROM, Audio). Students can use these materials when they study or do their assignment, and they can study language exams such as TOEIC by using the Central Library e-Learning system.

The Central Library establishes a Periodicals & Reference Reading Room /Multimedia Zone, Borrowing Services & Social Science Reading Room, Human Science Reading Room, Natural Science Reading Room & Art and Physical Education Reading Room. The Central Library is a brick building located next to the College of Humanities and College of Economics and Commerce, and is located near the top of the hill as you walk along the street from the back gate to the main gate. The Central Library is open from 08:30 to 20:00 on weekdays during the semester and from 09:00 to 15:00 on Saturdays. It is open from 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays during vacation, and it is closed on Saturdays. Regardless of semester or vacation, K-lounge(1F, Creative Discussion Room&Creative Factory), will be operated from 06:00 to 24:00, and the Reading Rooms 1&2(3F) and 3(4F) will be operated from 06:00 to 24:00. The opening hours can be partially adjusted according to the library schedule and extended during the exam period. Currently, the library operating hours may have been changed due to COVID-19, so it is recommended that you check the library website(http://library.kyonggi.ac.kr/) before going.

 Please introduce yourself.

Hello, I’m Jung Ji-hyun, the staff of Public Service Team and I have been working at the library for 27 years. Currently, I am in charge of various administrative duties and evaluation of the library, and I conducted the library remodeling project, which is a university innovation support project, from 2019 to 2020.

What are the representative facilities of the Central Library?

One is "K-LOUNGE Creative Discussion Room", which replaced the existing electronic information room in 2019, and "K-LOUNGE Creative Factory", which replaced the space used as a campus shop, information operation team office, and director's office in 2020. In addition, Library of Kyonggi people’s Bookshelf is a representative facility installed in the library lobby for students' rest and communication. The Creative Discussion Room is a reading room where students can freely discuss and learn, and the Creative Factory is a reading room where they can partake in intensive learning and personal rest like in a book cafe.

What are the differences before and after the central library remodeling?

First of all, the reading rooms of the library, which used to be full of partition tables, have changed into a space with various concepts and forms. To make it easy and convenient for library users, the entire first floor of the library was changed to a study space where students can talk and rest. Accordingly, Circulation Desk was moved to the third floor, and the office space was reduced to about half of the existing area.

What departments are in the library and what are the tasks in the library?

The library is composed of two teams, Public Services Team(Central Library, Suwon campus) and Academic Information Team(Keumhwa Library, Seoul campus). Each team does their best to support the learning and research of members of Kyonggi University. First of all, we purchase and provide various academic information resources(very common books, e-BOOKs, non-book materials such as DVDs, electronic journals, and thesis materials) for studying and research. Then, it is kept in the library and on the website. In addition, our library intensively offers library workshop for freshmen who are unfamiliar with using library at the beginning of the first semester, and other workshops are available on request. Finally, the library also carries out various tasks such as evaluating universities, evaluating university libraries, and public disclosing university information.

Please introduce the event or program in progress at the Central Library.

The library operates seven programs throughout the year as part of the school's extracurricular program. We operate programs such as “Giving a Dream Contest (Dream 드림 공모전)”, which allows students to express their interest and affection for libraries, "Book Review Writing Program(讀書遺記-서평쓰기 프로그램)", which has become a representative library reading program since the beginning of 2014, and "Kyonggi Reading lots of Books Program (경기다독(多讀)이)" to support students who read a lot. In addition, we plan to start a cultural program called "Lend the Library!" in the second semester, which displays each club's work in the library lobby under the motto of "Library with Culture" and which promotes the club activities through small performances.

What should I be careful about when using the library?

If you observe library etiquette, the library will be a library that we can study and work together comfortably. The biggest problem is noise. Especially, chatting or talking on the phone is very disruptive behavior for students who study together, please refrain from damaging the facilities that everyone uses together. Also, I would like to ask you to thoroughly wear masks in the library, which is the most important thing at the moment. There are some users who wear masks when entering the library but don't wear masks inside the reading room because they think it will be okay. This is a clear violation of the quarantine rules, so we must always wear masks in the library for our health and safety.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I think the most common moment when librarians feel rewarded is when students find the material they want and then we see how much they like and appreciate it. Although it is a very private experience, when I was in charge of the library book review writing program, I received a handwritten letter from a student saying that she was able to get a good job thanks to her experience in the book review writing program. I was so thankful and proud of the student.

Please tell us what else you want to say to Kyonggi University students.

Last year, we prepared hard to remodel the reading room and library lobby, but it is a pity that many students cannot visit the library due to COVID-19. We hope that the moment will come as soon as possible when the library is crowded again with students, and we can overcome this pandemic situation well. Finally, I want to tell you the phrase, "If you sleep now, you can dream, but if you try now, you can achieve your dream." If you utilize books and the library, you will be able to take a step closer to your dream.

The library is a space for students at Kyonggi University, and students should make the most of the services provided by the library. The Central Library hosts various programs and events, and it has a lot of information for students, including many books and non-book materials. As the library has been newly remodeled, it would be good if many students from Kyonggi University use it.
