On February 9, 2020, in the 92th Academy Awards, the film “Parasite” was nominated for awards in a total of six categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best International Feature Film, Best Editing and Best Art. Among them, the “Parasite” became the most Academy Award-winning film, winning four awards, excluding Best Editing and Best Art awards. In particular, the “Parasite” is gaining worldwide attention as it is recorded as the first non-English work to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. In this regard, the Pharos will introduce the plot of the movie “Parasite” and the meaning that the movie is suggesting.

The movie “Parasite” begins by showing a poor four-member family living in a semi-basement with no fixed income. While making a poor living, a friend of Ki-woo’s prestigious university student comes to his house. A friend connects Ki-woo to a highpriced private lesson which he has been, Ki-woo will start his first private lesson with a fake certificate of attending a prestigious university. Based with Ki-woo, in the space of Mr. Park’s family Ki-woo’s younger sister, Ki-jeong, will be employed as an art therapist of Mr. Park’s son. Ki-woo’s family misled the situation differently from the fact that the driver and the housekeeper, who were previously working with Mr. Park, had been in the Mr. Park’s family. Also, kicks them out, his father, Ki-taek, is the driver of Mr. Park and his mother, Chung-sook, takes over the position as the housekeeper of Mr. Park’s house. The Ki-woo’s family enjoys themselves as if they were the owners of the house in the empty mansion, however the situation changes with the arrival of former housekeeper Moon-kwang. They find that Moon-kwang’s visit is due to his husband, who is living secretly in an underground air-raid shelter of Mr. Park’s mansion. The film is heightened by the conflict between Moon-kwang’s family and Ki-woo’s family. The work suggests the appearance of our society by portraying the coexistence and conflict of the rich, poor and extremely poor in the form of three conflicting families. This is a social problem that can be seen and sympathized with anywhere in the world, not just in Korea.

The Pharos would like to look at the specific props and the characters’ actions in a total of three categories. The first prop to pay attention is the gift, viewing stone brought by Ki-woo’s friend who introduced him to high-priced private lesson. This means a landscape stone, in which wealth and luck are brought in by just having it. As the stone enters, Kiwoo enters the Mr. Park’s house and starts high-priced private lesson. This appears to be a clear indication of the content development due to the symbolism of the chief executive. The second prop to look at is peach. The Ki-woo’s family wants to take advantage of the fact that the housekeeper who worked at the Mr Park’s house has allergic to peach to drive her out and get Chung-sook gets a job as a housekeeper. Ki-taek shows a picture of Moon-kwang in the hospital to Mr. Park’s wife, Yeon-kyo, and says Moon-kwang is a tuberculosis patient. Yeon-kyo then meets Moon-kwang as she enters the house, drinking fuzz on a peach and coughing. When she saw him lifting up a tissue sprinkled with ketchup from a trash can, Yeon-kyo misunderstands Moon-kwang as tuberculosis and dismisses her. When Moonkwang is fired, Mr. Park says the housekeeper is easy to get. This shows two contrasting aspects. One is that the rich as if nothing had happened, the other is a livelihood for the poor. The third thing you should pay attention is a disinfection truck. When the disinfection truck started disinfection in the neighborhood, Ki-taek wants to kill the house pests with the windows opening despite the family’s dissuasion. As if pests are suffering from medicine, the family suffers from inhaling disinfectant smoke. Among them, however, Ki-taek shows alone no signs of coughing. It is also suggestion that Ki-taek survives alone in the concluding part.

We, the Pharos, found two main backgrounds for people to know before they watch a movie “Parasite.” Therefore first, it can be the “structure of a house.” For the house of Mr. Park, it is described as economically affluent, having the structure of going upward only. However, interestingly, the house of Ki-taek’s is described as not only economically poor but also the house that has only a way to go downward rather than upward like the case of Mr. Park. You should understand way to go home and difference of house of structure rather than just house’s scale. Second, in movie, Mr. park said “smell.” Smell means that fundamental problem can’t solve although Ki-taek’s family try to imitate Mr. park’s life which is represented economically affluent class. Therefore, smell means poverty which can’t never erase. Therefore you should understand not stinking but fundamental problem which means that poor class can’t follow rich class.

The “Guardian,” the world-famous British newspaper, published an article which contain the reason that the Parasite shoul be Oscar-winning. Also, Guardian reported that Parasite’s elaborate structure and director’s ability to change tone are good. Changing tone means that movie starts with a comedy, turns into a thriller, and ends up with a devastating tragedy. In addition, “Washington Post,” the world-famous American newspaper, reported that Parasite is one of the best highly rate movie and said Parasite’s background is Korea, but Parasite’s theme that contain human dignity and class struggle is as universal as the rest of the world.

The parasite deals with polarization of wealth that modern society has commonly and topic that affect people’s life directly. The Pharos’s interpretation may not be 100% accurate. Whether you agree or disagree with the above interpretation may depend on the reader’s interpretation. However, it is clear that dealing with problem through various interpretation and Criticism is worth itself. Why don’t you plus fun with various interpretation after watching movie from now in?
