Volleyball, Let Us Enjoy It Together!

On October 12, Korean professional volleyball held its opening ceremony. Volleyball is one of the few winter ball games. Currently, volleyball is thriving enough to become the top favorite in winter sports in Korea. There are not many sports to enjoy in winter, but volleyball is an indoor ball sport that we can enjoy regardless of the cold in winter. If you are not familiar with volleyball, the Pharos hopes you can enjoy it with others after reading this article.

To briefly explain the rules of volleyball, first, a volleyball team has six players on each team. In the professional league, the team that takes three set first wins. Also, except for the set-point situation, the team that first achieves 15 points in the final set and 25 points in the other sets wins. A set-point refers to a situation in which both teams score 24 points. In this situation, the team that scores two runs first will have the win. If you look at a volleyball match, there is one player in a different colored uniform on each team, a “Libero” who specializes in defense. This player cannot attack and must only defend in front of the net. The fouls involving the ball include double contact, in which one person touches the ball twice continuously, and four hits or more of the ball by one team before returning it. There is a touch-net foul when a player’s body or clothing touches the net that is not related to the ball, and an over-net foul, which is called when a part of player’s body crosses the net, except when blocking the ball. In volleyball, the opponent is given points as soon as fouls occur. Therefore, it is also very important not to foul.

Now that you have mastered this brief explanation of volleyball rules, let’s find out about Korean professional volleyball teams. There are six teams in the women’s league and seven teams in the men’s league in Korea. The women’s league champion for the 2018-2019 season was Heungkuk Life and the men’s league winner was Korean Air. Also, the MVP awards were taken by Lee Jae-young, a member of Heungkuk Life, and Jung Ji-seok, a member of Korean Air. Lee Jae-young, in particular, was awarded the MVP award unanimously by the judges. Although Korean volleyball has yet to gain huge popularity or achievements like baseball and soccer, there are Korean players who have excelled abroad because of their ability. First of all, Kim Yeon-kyoung is the most well-known player. Kim Yeon-kyoung first advanced to the Japanese league in 2009, before moving on to the Turkish league, the world’s top women’s volleyball league, in 2011. Since then, she has continued to play in the Turkish league except for the 2017-2018 season. Next up is Moon Sung-min, currently a member of Hyundai Capital. Moon Sung-min played in the Turkish league in the 2009-2010 season after playing in the German league in the 2008-2009 season. Finally, Kim Sani played for the Rokomotive Baku team in the Azerbaijan league from 2011 to 2014 after joining the professional club in 1999.

Why did volleyball, which was not popular until a few years ago, grow to become the most popular sport among winter indoor sports in Korea? First, the change in game time is seen as a factor in the increase in attendance. For women’s volleyball, the time of the weekday match has been adjusted from the previous 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., which has made it possible to visit the stadium after work or school. In addition, fans view the fierce competition in the rankings as a box office factor in volleyball. In particular, the lower-ranked teams draw attention from fans as they often play the upper-middle class teams. An other factor is the good performances at international competitions by Korean teams, which have made people more interested in Korea professional volleyball.

The Pharos hopes Kyonggi University students are interested in volleyball, the most popular winter indoor sport, and visit volleyball stadiums where fierce and fun games are held. Korean professional volleyball stadiums include Jangchung Gymnasium in Seoul, Suwon Indoor Stadium, Chungmu Gymnasium in Daejeon, Gyeyang Gymnasium in Incheon, Uijeongbu Sports Complex Gymnasium, Yu Gwan-soon Gymnasium in Cheonan and Sangnoksu Gymnasium in Ansan. In particular, Suwon Indoor Stadium is a convenient distance from the school, so the Pharos recommends visiting it after school classes to watch volleyball matches.
