There are so many holidays and anniversaries in May that is called the family month. If you wish to consider the most popular holiday in May, you could select May 5, Children’s Day. Everyone knows that May 5 is Children’s Day. However, who made Children’s Day? If you raise the question, it will not be easy to answer. To answer that question, let’s find out about the founder of Children’s Day, an important holiday that pops up in May!

Do you know when the word child came into use? It is whose pen name was sofa , Bang Jung-hwan, that created the word children and Children’s Day for children. Bang Jung-hwan was born in 1899 in Hanseong-bu. He was born the son of a wealthy family, but at the age of nine he had to live in great poverty when his families fortunes collapsed. However, he always acted positively regardless of the circumstances and spent his school days in leadership positions with a positive attitude. He began his career in earnest after marrying the daughter of Son Byung-hee, a well-known Cheondogyo independence activist. Having participated in many activities, such as the March 1 Independence Movement, he became interested in the Joseon people, especially children, who at that time were victims of colonial rule. After starting a full-scale youth movement in 1921 with the Cheondogyo Children’s Society, the first Children’s Day was finally established on May 1 the following year. He later succeeded in holding a children’s art exhibition in 1928, which involved children from more than 20 countries, in spite of Japanese colonial rule.

Next, why is Children’s Day held on May 1? The first Children’s Day was held on May 1, 1922, but later, the date was changed to the first Sunday in May, and then to May 5 in 1946 after the liberation from Japanese colonial rule. Bang Jung-hwan died after living a life for children. When he was a young man, there was no proper name for a child, so just slang terms were used. However, he strongly objected to this, saying that children also deserved respect as human beings, and started writing “children” in the standard language. His love for children is also found in his pen name sofa . Sofa (小波) means ripples in Chinese characters. He played a role in inspiring the dreams and hopes of people by making these “ripples” in the hearts of children.

Bang Jung-hwan died at the age of 33 but achieved many things in his short life. He never stopped loving children until the day he died. He was a true father of all children, and he put all his efforts into improving the lives of children. According to one anecdote, he left a note for his wife before he died that said, “What I have done has caused ripples in the hearts of the children. This wave will grow larger day after day. In the future, it will be a big wave. Please live a long time and watch the waves.” It is good to think of Children’s Day as a simple holiday and have fun, but if you know the background of how it came into being, playing with these thoughts will help you have a more meaningful family month.
