Kyonggi University has not only Korean students but also foreign students from various countries studying at the university. We sometimes see them whenever we walk around the school to listen to a lecture, but we don't know them in detail. There are probably quite a few Korean students who are curious about them. Therefore, the Pharos interviewed two foreign students briefly and listened to their stories.

Pharos

Please introduce yourselves.

Magellan

Hello, I’m Magellan. I’m from Cameroon and now I’m majoring in electronic engineering at Kyonggi University. I’m 25 years old, and I will graduate in my 4th year next year. I can’t believe 4 years have passed already!

Ho Hang-nam

Hi, I’m Ho Hang-nam and I’m from Vietnam. I’m majoring in business administration and I’m in my 3rd year.

Pharos

Why did you come to Korea among the many possible countries, and why did you choose Kyonggi University most of all?

Magellan

I came to Korea because I wanted to go to Samsung. The reason why I chose Kyonggi University is because my hometown friend was attending this school. He majored in mechanical engineering and graduated last year. Now he works for Hyundai.

Ho Hang-nam

There is a saying in Korea, “Follow your friends to Gangnam.” Like a friend of mine, I came to Korea and also Kyonggi University. I learned about Korea through my friend because my friend came here first, and then we studied together after that in Korea.

Pharos

How was your life as a student in Korea different from what you thought it would be like?

Magellan

I thought Korean students could be open-minded before I came here, so I thought I could make many friends easily. It wasn’t true, actually. Another surprise was that Korean students study very hard only during exam periods. I couldn’t adjust at first because they stayed up all night too many times to prepare for exams.

Ho Hang-nam

I was surprised at the weather first. I thought it was cold in Korea, but I never imagined it would be this cold. It was so cold that it was different from what I thought it would be. Another difference is that my major classes are a little harder than I thought. I think it was even harder for me to take Korean classes.

Pharos

What were the pros and cons of attending Kyonggi University?

Magellan

First of all, the professors are very good really. The best thing is that professors pay lots of attention to their students. The system of academic advisor counseling is in good order. There’s no inconvenient thing particularly, but it was a bit of a pain at the beginning because it didn’t suit my taste. Now that I’m in my fourth year, I'm kind of used to it.

Ho Hang-nam

The good thing is that I can have various exchanges with my Korean friends. I don’t know if it was lacking or not, but I don’t think it was. I’m satisfied with my school and doing great!

Pharos

How would you like to spend the rest of your school life?

Magellan

Since I will graduate soon, I want to bring it to a successful ending. I want to get good grades for one last semester and travel to Jeju Island. Also, I’d like to get an electromagnetic license.

Ho Hang-nam

I want to live life to the full by improving my Korean language ability. My goal is to study Korean hard before I graduate and get the TOPIK level 4.

Pharos

What do you want from Kyonggi University?

Magellan

Just like professors have done, I want them to take care of students continuously.

Ho Hang-nam

I wish the school would make a small separate scholarship for foreign students.

Through the interview, the Pharos could hear the honest stories of foreign students studying at Kyonggi University. Listening to the details of their normally unknown Korean and school lives, we found that they share the same routines as we do. It also showed that many foreign students are happy to interact with Korean students and want to share more activities with them. In the future, it would be better to develop a relationship between Korean students and foreign students that can be more active and helpful to each other.
