Not something you had to do at the moment, nor a mere future ambition, but the
dream you held.
The dream that might feel small to you, comparing yours to others who seemed more successful. Or the dream you inflated to meet the expectations of others. Or the dream that the weight of reality buried so deeply that you've forgotten it. I remember a middle school class when the teacher asked, “What is your dream?” While most answered firefighter, chef, or president, one student said, “I just want to marry a nice girl and live happily.” Everyone laughed, but the teacher sincerely praised him, saying, “That is what a real dream looks like.”
We live in the real world and we set “goals” that are based on reality. We achieve these goals and live according to what reality demands of us. This isn’t to say those goals are wrong. However, they often make us too realistic, filling the desires of reality rather than fulfilling what we truly want. Some might argue, “If you keep achieving those goals, won’t your dreams eventually come true?” That’s true, but how long can you endure running toward an uncertain future? At the very least, we need a guiding light. That guiding light must come from you, not someone else.
So, what is your dream?
The kind of dream that lifts your head when you’re down, that lights the way as you walk your path. Your own happiness, your own dream.
