While all classes are being conducted non-face-to-face due to COVID-19, the method of the class is important. Non-face-to-face classes are divided into classes that are taken through video applications in real-time and classes that professors record in advance. There was a limit to the quality of the recorded class and communication during the class. Therefore students who prefer real-time classes and students who prefer recorded classes are at odds on campus SNS and bulletin boards. Pharos wants to hear the opinions of Kyonggi University students who have two opposing positions.

Are you satisfied with the current non-face-to-face class method?

Recorded class side : Currently, Kyonggi University’s non-face-to-face class is mainly composed of recorded class and serves as a real-time class at the discretion of the professor. Numerous opinions are coming and going to decide next year’s class method. In determining non-face-to-face class methods, it is more efficient to use a recorded class method similar to now.

Real-time class side : Currently, the non-face-to-face class method is not satisfactory because the recorded lectures are also taught in real time. It is more efficient to make real-time lectures to improve the quality of classes better than recorded methods.

Then, what is your preferred teaching style and its advantages?

Recorded class side : The advantage of recorded classes is that there are no restrictions on time and space, so you can participate in classes in a free environment. It offers the convenience of letting students take classes anywhere in case something happens on the day of the class and students are unable to participate. Second, due to the nature of the recorded class, it offers the advantage of listening to the class several times. For example, it allows students to review the classes again and is also useful when studying for exams.

Real-time class side : First, the advantage of real-time class is that when you conduct real-time classes with your professor, you can communicate questions and answers in real time. It is a way to finally help improve the quality of the class because you can ask questions right away and the professor’s questions can also be answered by students. Second, after the end of COVID-19, it helps to match the lifestyle of face-to-face classes. In the case of real-time class, classes are conducted within a set class, so they are operated similarly to the actual school schedule. Therefore, even if the teaching method is changed to face-to-face, students can participate in the class without changing the pattern.

What is the disadvantage of the non-preferred class method?

Recorded class side : The disadvantage of real-time classes is that first, students have to pay for all the necessary equipment such as video cameras and computers when real-time classes are conducted. Students have the right to use school facilities by paying tuition. However, if real-time classes are conducted, the cost will increase for students. For example, students must purchase these items if they do not have a computer or a video camera for taking classes. In an uncomfortable situation, the school’s support is insufficient and there is no alternative, so the burden on students is increasing. Second, problems occur depending on the class environment. Even if the online lecture infrastructure needed for real-time classes is stable, the stability of the network server is not clearly determined when connecting to the Internet or a mobile phone. If there is a network problem, there are cases where you can’t take the class. Third, there are many programs for classes, so there are many things to prepare. In other words, different classes such as Google Class, Zoom, and LMS all operate differently, causing confusion in the process of preparing and studying for the test.

Real-time class side : The are several disadvantages of recorded classes. First of all, there is a limit to communication involving questions and answers. When a question arises during a recorded lecture, it cannot be asked immediately due to the characteristics of the lecture. Of course, questions and answers can be answered through notes and e-mails, but there is a problem with communication because it is not an immediate answer. Second, due to the feature of the recorded lecture, concentration will be poor. Real-time classes will be conducted at a fixed-time by the professor. However, the recorded lectures lead to poorer concentration because students can view them in the time and place that they want. Third, there is always a problem to check the time because the class upload time is not set. Even if it can be checked through an application and a note, the alarm does not go up immediately, which can cause problems in attendance.

So what is the best way to serve the students of Kyonggi University?

Recorded class side : As mentioned earlier, there are pros and cons of the recorded class. In terms of cost, recorded classes are more advantageous than real-time class due to video cameras and application and network errors. However, it is clear that there is an advantage of real-time lectures in the question and answer section or

in improving the quality of classes. Therefore, the opinions of the recorded class are that it is necessary for the school to review the cost of support.

Real-time class side : As mentioned earlier, real-time classes also have pros and cons. The nature of real-time classes makes it easy to ask questions and answer questions. The strength of communication exists, but time and space constraints act as disadvantages. Therefore, the opinion of real-time class is that it is necessary to consider the advantages of real-time class that help improve the quality of classes and the advantages of recorded class without time and space restrictions.

Through the discussion, the two sides confirmed their opinions on the non-face-to-face class method. Since there are differences in values between each other, we cannot determine which opinions are right or wrong, but we need to think about which direction is helpful for students at Kyonggi University. Pharos wishes you a bright semester in the right direction.
