Many incidents have occurred in the campus during this semester. There was news for the students to be pleased with, and there was still a heavy and serious incident to be taken. Through “Campus Issue”, the Pharos would like to introduce what happened on campus during this semester and its impact. This will introduce how to calculate grades changed due to the Corona Virus incident, the introduction of buses in Suwon on campus, whether former president Sohn Jong-kook will return to campus, and the appearance of Kyonggi University in the media, which was the background of the drama and film filming site.

The Rise of New Transportation

Until recently the “cat bus” was the only means of transportation that traveled around campus. However, this year, city buses have begun entering the school. Just because the city bus comes in does not mean that the “cat bus” has disappeared. Therefore, students at Kyonggi University can have an easier school life. Buses come in through both the main and back gates. First of all, the city buses that come in through the main gate are numbers 16, 16-1, 16-2, 32-5 and 35. These buses take on passengers from the bus stop in front of Lotte Market 999 near the main gate, pass through the main gate and students get off in front of the Teleconvention Center. You can get on at this stop for free. Otherwise, all passengers on buses entering through the back and main gates must pay to get on and off at the school. Of the five buses, number 35 has the shortest interval. Number 16 runs from the school to Hajeo-ri Village Hall and number 16-1 from the school and back to school. Number 16-2 runs from the school to Suwon Station. Besides, number 32-5 goes to the Munhak4-ri stop from the school and number 35 runs from the school to the Hwaseong Humansia Apartment stop. Buses entering through the back gate are number 2, 6, 400 and 400-4. These buses can be taken from the bus stop in front of Gwanggyo Station. They then pass through the back gate, and stop at the tennis courts. Number 2 and 6 are town buses. Number 2 goes from the school to Hoban Village School Complex 2, and number runs from the school to Hwaseo Station. The 400 and 400-4 buses are regular city buses that run to Gungpyeong Port and Hwaseong Bio Valley, respectively. The disadvantage of the cat bus, which was able to solve the inconvenience of climbing the hill when going to school, was that the time was fixed. However, the city buses run frequently and run on weekends, so many students can go to school conveniently.

Controversy Former President Sohn Jong-kook's Return to Kyonggi University

There is a controversy over whether former president Sohn Jong-kook, who had stepped down from his position at the school, will return to Kyonggi University. Former president Sohn Jong-kook illegally admitted students contravention of the admission process, embezzled the university’s fees and sold educational land when he was the president of Kyonggi University. Last year, he attended a meeting of the Board of Trustees without having proper school qualifications, sparking much controversy within Kyonggi University. The fifth meeting of the Board of Trustees took place on June 29 this year, The contents of the meeting are as follows: Three trustees’ terms expire on August 27 this year, and they shared their opinions on whether to appoint successors. Among the discussions, it was said that because Sohn Jong-kook’s term of office expired while waiting for his inauguration approval from the Education Ministry, he should be reelected for a term starting on August 28, 2020. One of the trustees argued that Son Jong-kook was a descendant of the founder of Kyonggi University and said that the school could only stand upright if there was an owner guiding school affairs. Another trustee pointed out that although the Board of Trustees had made efforts, there had been difficulties in the approval process of the Education Ministry, and said that it cannot be achieved without coordinated communication among the members, adding, “The chairman and the president did not provide a framework for solving the problem through communication between former president Sohn Jong-kook and members of the school.” No candidate was elected as a result of the board vote. One trustee criticized the problems with the management of the board, which should have a sacred mission to run the school, saying, “It seems to be a premeditated result. The trustee went on to say, Two trustees are intending to overthrow the existing Board of Trustees. As a result, Sohn Jong-kook’s nomination was rejected. However, we should not be complacent here, but rather should continue to be vigilant over the appointment of Sohn Jong-kook.

Kyonggi University in Media

Kyonggi University is also a filming location for dramas, dvertisements, and so on because of its beautiful campus. However, freshmen in 2020 were not able to appreciate the beautiful campus of Kyonggi University as the school offered online lectures due to the influence of Corona 19. To soothe the disappointment of freshmen, Paros introduces the beautiful appearance of Kyonggi University, which is exposed to the media.

- My ID is Gangnam Beauty (building 6, E Square)

My ID is Gangnam Beauty, Kyonggi University's 6 lecture building and E Square were exposed a lot. The red brick buildings, ponds, and trees are well harmonized.

- Promote Korea Basic Income Fair

In the above video, the open space in front of Kyonggi University's Teleconvention Center was exposed. In fact, Kyonggi University students are famous for taking pictures of flowers in spring.

- Love Playlist In Seoul 2 (building 1)

This is the campus of Kyunggi University's first lecture hall exposed to the web drama In Seoul 2. Long stretches of roads and well-organized trees are in harmony.

Maybe the reason why Kyonggi University was so beautiful was because the school was full of students enjoying their college life. I hope that the Corona 19 will end as soon as possible and that the day will come when you take classes in a real classroom, not online.

Changes in the Grade Calculation Method Caused by COVID-19

After COVID-19 caused non-face-to-face classes, the grade calculation method became more flexible. In the first semester of 2020, professors could give students grades based on absolute evaluation at their discretion. However, due to professors’ different standards, students were confused about their grades. The thing that was most unusual was that more than 3,000 students received grade of more than 4.0. If so, how will grades be calculated for the second semester of 2020? In the case of the second semester, face-to-face and non-face-to-face lectures will go on together and the grade calculation method will be a relative evaluation of the mitigation ratio. Before COVID-19 occurred, our university used a method based on relative evaluation of the general ratio.

The relative evaluation of the general ratio method allowed professors to give scores of A and A+ to 20 to 30 percent of the students. However, the relative evaluation of the mitigation ratio method will allow professors to give scores of A and A+ to 20 to 40 percent of students. In other words, standards have been relaxed. Likewise, the relative evaluation of the general ratio method allowed professor to give scores of B and B+ to 20 to 40 percent of students, whereas the relative evaluation of the mitigation ratio method will allow professors to give scores of B and B+ to 40 to 60 percent of students. In the case of grades that are a C, or lower, the relative evaluation of the mitigation ratio method permits them to be given to 0 to 40 percent of students unlike the relative evaluation of the general ratio method which allows such scores to be given to 0 to 60 percent of students. Keep in mind that in the second semester absolute evaluation will not be used. Although students will be evaluated according to the relative evaluation of mitigation ratio method, if students study hard, they will still receive excellent grades.

It is somewhat difficult for students to be interested in school events when they cannot stay on campus for a long time. Without students’ interest, issues in the school can be influenced for the benefit of only a few people. Therefore, students at Kyonggi University need to pay attention to various events on campus.
