There are many negative situations that we might face in personal terms during our campus life. Mostly our classmates don’t know much about which institutions in the school to go with complaints about problems that can occur anytime and anywhere in the university. How can we deal with our various types of complaints in most effective and convenient way while studying at Kyonggi University? The Pharos investigated the types of problems that students frequently face and how they can be resolved.

With the survey above, we are able to conclude that most students have had the experience of having some kind of complaint while at university. We discovered the fact that there has been the institutional problem of some air conditioners that are too old and thus decrease the learning efficiency of students in summer. Plus there was a case of a class didn’t proceed smoothly sometimes because there was a problem with a microphone. In addition, there were complaints that the university’s shuttle bus runs only up to the metropolitan areas of Seoul and northern Suwon City. Also, there were complaints about the scholastic websites that students use to apply for their subjects each semester. As we can see from the survey, there are many kinds of complaints that students might have. Students usually suggested referring them to the student council, or asking the department office for help as solutions to solve their complaints. Then what is the best way to resolve the complaints? Also, which method would be the best solution for different types of complaints?

The most common method used by students is to report problems to the student council. This is because the student council has been focusing on communication, and often students do not know how to resolve the complaint by themselves. For example, when the Cat Bus or shuttle bus does not depart or arrive on schedule, a student can complain to the student council through diverse channels. Then they start an investigation and give feedback to the students. It is possible for a student to express his or her dissatisfaction to the company, but unless it is a group expression, it is more effective and official for the complaint to come from the student council. The matter of the old air conditioners is also more likely to be resolved effectively if it is reported to the student council. However, if there are problems related to the maintenance of facilities, repairs, materials usage or course application, it is better to report them directly to the faculty member in charge. Let’s examine some more cases to have a better understanding of this issue.

The following cases come from the complaints that have been reported to the student council since 2018. The first case is about a broken water eraser in a lecture room. When a student reported it to the student council, they answered that the water erasers are not university-supplied equipment, so the repair must be done by the manufacturer. Given this answer, it is clear that reporting the problem to the company directly is a faster and more effective solution. Therefore, if you have the same problem, you’d better solve it by calling the company. The next case is about the maintenance and repair of facilities. Students requested the repair of some stairs and a soccer net. The student council gave the answer that they are both managed by the Facility Management Team, so it was tossed to them. According to their answer, in cases like this, we should not also complain to the student council. Instead, it is faster to call directly to the team in charge. The last one is about the slow computers on the 5th floor of the library. The student council answered that they reported this matter to the Computer and Date Team. In a case like this, it might take longer to solve the problem if the complaint goes to the team in charge via the student council. Thus, why don’t you call the Computer and Data Team directly? Finally, specific tasks such as those related to scholarships, official documents, student ID cards, the student exchange program and so on, are easier to finish when you do them on your own.

It is very difficult for all things to go well during our time at the university. You might have complaints, inquiries or suggestions. These things can contribute to the development of the school. However, if these thoughts remain unspoken, that will not change anything. You might think there will it be no change whether you solve the problem or not. You might also not be certain about how to solve a problem well. From now on what about being different than before? For the benefit of both individuals and the school, it is recommended that you exercise your right as a student to communicate. The student council can play the role of a bridge between the school and students well. However, unless it is necessary to contact the council, try to solve problems by yourself! Surprisingly, there are lots of things you can solve without the student council.
