The world is changing faster, so people today are more stressed out and busy than ever. University students also have a busier university life than before. For this reason, mental illness is getting worse day by day. Therefore, the Pharos investigated depression, a topic that has been on many people’s minds lately.

We all experience sad and gloomy feelings. These feelings are temporary. They are normal as our lives become more various and we mature. However, depression is different. Depression is a mental illness that people can’t cure by themselves. It’s also a common disease that 20% of people get during their lives. Thus, depression is called a coldness of the heart. We still don’t know the cause of depression exactly. Obviously, it’s caused by a combination of genetic, biochemical and environmental factors. If you experience depression, the symptoms may be various. There may be a loss of will, lethargy, despair, feeling suicidal and so on. Sometimes, there is a decline in cognitive ability or physical discomfort.

The reason why depression is dangerous is because of suicide. Depressed patients can’t manage their daily lives, so they may destroy and end their lives by choosing suicide. Depression’s pain drove Jong-hyeon, who was an idol singer, to commit suicide. In this country, which has unfortunately won the title of having the top suicide rate for 10 years straight among OECD members, depression is no longer a mental illness to take lightly. A fact we should know is that there has been an increase 20-something depression patients. Depression patients in their 20s increased by 22.2% in 5 years, while depression in other people from 10 to 50 years old decreased. The growth rate of depression patients in their 60s and older is the second highest at 20%. It means that there has been an increase in depression among the elderly in modern society. The following text is a short interview of a university student’s daily school life.

Q: How is your 20s life compared to when you were a teenager? Do you think you’re under more stress or less?

A: Umm, I think it’s different in many ways. There was a big and obvious factor named the national college entrance exam throughout my school life. Now that I’m a university student, I think there are other factors that include relationships, grades, qualifications, and finally getting a job. It’s different for each person, but I personally think it’s more difficult now. Especially, I’m most worried and depressed when I think about what I’m going to do in the future.

Q: Do you think you suffer from depression?

A: No, but I think l have a bipolar disorder sometimes. I get emotional ups and downs.

This is not the only person who is extremely stressed out and suffers from depression during the semester. Now, we are going to suggest some measures for  people who suffer from depression during daily life in school, at the office, or  anywhere. The measures are separated into when you are suspected of having depression and when other people, your close family, friends and so on, have that disease. First of all, what should you do when your close friends have depression. It is important not to blame the irritation or lethargy of the patient on the person, instead figure out the cause and communicate well. Also, you have to help the other person express his or her own feelings rather than giving advice hurriedly while having a conversation. Moreover, you should not expect a sudden change. Working out and doing various activities together are also good ideas. However, if you judge the disease to be serious, you must advise the person to be treated by a professional.

Next, if you suspect that you are suffering from depression, you have to recognize that the depressive disorder is a mental disorder, not a simple depressive emotion, and observe the symptoms carefully. Find out the causes of your emotional distress and the ways to overcome them. If it is difficult to solve the problem by yourself, you can get help from others. Consultation with a psychiatrist, getting telephone counseling, which Ministry of Health and Welfare operates 24 hours a day, making an emergency call to Health and Welfare (129), and contacting “Happy Mind,” which is run by the neuropsychiatry community, are some examples. However, the most important thing is having a lifestyle that will help you overcome depression. It is critical to try to think positively and pleasantly, and maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a regular and well-balanced diet. Also, yoga, meditation, relaxation therapy, and regular exercise are often used. In particular, regular exercise circulates the flow of energy that is very helpful in improving depressive disorders, and according to a study, more than 40 percent of people with depression got better because of regular work outs.

It is important to have an attitude that says you can overcome the disease. However, it might degenerate into a severe disorder if you leave it untreated for a long time. You should consider whether you are your normal self or not during the busy semester. Also, don’t forget the people around you whom worry about you and cherish you. Finally, how about giving yourself a compliment?
