Have you ever thought about Korean’s past appearance? Do you know what pictures exist of the Republic of Korea from Gojoseon to the Joseon Dynasty and the modern era? From now on, the Pharos will introduce some places where you can satisfy your curiosity. If you go there with your friends before the next vacation, you will have a very meaningful time. Let’s find out where we can look at our ancestors' past and feel their traces.

The Suwon Museum, which is connected with Kyonggi University

The Suwon Museum is located next to the Gwanggyo Gymnasium. The exhibition room on the first floor has been organized to hold special exhibitions on various topics. As a recent theme, it is re-examining the modern history of Suwon Station on the 80th anniversary of the Suin Line. If you go into the exhibition room, you can see the background of the railroad and the changes on the subway map. On the second floor, there are the Korean Calligraphy Museum and the Suwon History Museum. In the Calligraphy Museum, you can see not only calligraphy from the three kingdoms, Goguryo, Baekje, and Silla, but also work from Goryeo, Joseon and the modern era. In the Suwon History Museum, you can see Suwon in the three kingdoms, and during the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasties. In addition, you can experience the inside of a Suin train. In the meeting room of Suwon in the 60s, you can wear school uniforms from the 60s and see the central theater, a public bath and a photo shop as if you are walking the streets at that time. In the last zone, you can see driver's licenses, school tests, banknotes, and bottles from the 70s and 80s. When you visit the outdoor exhibition, you are able to see various artifacts such as prehistoric artifacts, tombstones, sacred artifacts, and so on. Suwon Traditional Cultural Center

The Suwon Traditional Cultural Center is a place where you can experience Korea’s dietary life. We can experience not only the traditional manners of our ancestors, but their food, clothing and shelter. The Suwon Traditional Cultural Center has many kinds of programs, but at this time we will introduce a traditional manners program. When you hear the program’s name, you might not be interested. However, the program is composed of various experiences. Therefore, we can learn about traditional manners as well as diverse
traditional practices.

The traditional manners experience is composed of wearing Hanbok properly, learning a salutation, making a Korean traditional confectionery (Dasik ),and learning the tea ceremony. First, all participants change their clothes to Hanbok. Then, we learn about how to tie jeogori . After that, we learn a salutation. In a traditional Korean salutation, women put the right hand on the left hand and men take the opposite posture. Also, in a funeral hall, we should change the hand positions of the man and woman. The reason is to express sorrow by acting differently than usual.

Second, there is also time to learn a deep bow. The deep bow is mostly used in Korea’s traditional wedding ceremony and other traditional events. The deep bow is usually done indoors because the knees are lowered completely to the ground. However, an outdoor bow is also taught.

Third, we can learn to make Dasik. Dasik is a simple snack that is mostly eaten with tea. Dasik is made by putting soy flour into a pretty mold. Then you’re finished! We can make delicious snacks in a short time.

Finally, the tea ceremony is the traditional practice of making tea for guests. We can learn more about how our ancestors treated guests in order to entertain them. The last drop of tea from the bowl is the most delicious. Therefore, it is given to the oldest guest.

In addition, you can learn about the attire of men and women, the effectiveness of tea, and the proper postures for pouring tea.

Hanok Café “Seol-ram”

There is a cafe in the alley between Paldalmun and Hanok. The outward appearance of the café has a hanok look and it catches people’s eyes. Also, there is an attractive garden near the entrance. When you enter the café, you can see ceramics and an interior decorated with wood. The tables on the left side were also made to match the characteristics of hanok. The menu includes traditional leaf tea, traditional tea, aide, coffee, and desserts. After looking around Paldalmun, why not finish your day with a cup of traditional tea at the Hanok Café?
