In 2023, Kyonggi University will implement a new structural change to foster the convergence of talents which lead the 4th industrial era and Hallyu culture. Also, a software safety security major will be newly established for the first time in Korea. In addition to recent issues such as expanding manpower in semiconductor industries, we are anticipating a new future direction in software-oriented education. Pharos would like to talk about the reorganization of the departments at KGU by classifying the changes into three categories: integration, establishment, and separation.

The first change is the combination of minor department which were in danger of elimination altogether as they became the target of reorganization. The Department of Creative Writing of Humanities College will be integrated into the Department of Korean Language & Literature. Likewise, the International Industrial Information major, which was part of the Department of Business Administration, will get absorbed into the management major. The Department of Nano Engineering and Department of Electronic Engineering are being integrated as the Department of Electronic Engineering, with majors being divided into nano·semiconductor engineering and systems of information and communications engineering. The Department of ICT Convergence, with majors in business informatics and industrial and systems engineering, will be absorbed into the management information systems major. Next change, the majorthe major in environmental energy engineering in the Department of Convergence Energy Systems Engineering and the architectural engineering major from the Department of Smart City Engineering will be combined as the Department of Social Energy Systems Engineering. The reason these majors are getting changed is that they share the same fundamentals, which can be seen in the introduction courses of each major.

Second, a software safety security major will be established for the first time in Korea to produce professional manpower. This will be a major within in the Department of AI Computer Science and Engineering as KGU aims to foster talent specialized in safety, which leads software innovation, this new major will strengthen education in software security and produce social safety leaders.

The final change is the separation and reorganization of recruitment units. The existing five majors in the Department of Public Safety will be reduced to the Department of Police Administration and Correction Psychology.  As the existing corrections major will be combined with psychology, it adds to the rare value of the only corrections- related major in Korea. The Department of Social Welfare and Youth Studies will be reorganized into a new department called the Department of Human Services, and the law major will be relocated into the Department of Law. The same goes for changes at the KGU Seoul campus. With the elimination of the Department of Tourism, a new hotel management and culinary major will be established. The remaining majors in the Department of Tourism will be divided into the tourism development management major and the Department of Tourism and Culture.

Through an interview with Professor Sung Young-Je, the head of the Department of Electronic Engineering, we were able to find out in detail about the changes in the integrated departments. In the case of integrated departments, the name and curriculum of the department were reorganized in consideration of the positions of existing enrolled students in order to avoid upsetting their academic careers. Soon after entering school, no student would want their major to disappear. In addition, the number of teachers will increase as the number of students increases due to the reorganization of the department. Through this, departments can apply for more financial investment, and it is expected to have a positive effect regarding external evaluation. In addition, the equipment and content used in the existing departments should be absorbed into the new department. The number of lectures will be reduced, but as new teachers are hired, they will specialize in particular fields to increase competitiveness.

"Kyonggi University aims to provide quality education to enrolled students and prospective freshmen through structural reform in the 2023 school year. Our school seems to have reorganized the titles and curriculum of departments by reflecting the voices of the affected students. In order for Kyonggi University to continue to develop, it must be accompanied not only by effective education but also by students' initiative. Kyonggi University is expected to continue to grow through this new method of organization."
