In Korea, air pollution caused by fine dust and yellow dust has long remained an unsolved issue. Recently, there have been many media reports about the seriousness of air pollution. Accordingly, people are making their best efforts to prevent air pollution so that we can enjoy clean air. Most households are dealing with this problem by purchasing and using air purifiers, but in studio apartments near schools or houses where people live alone, purchasing air purifiers is often impractical. Therefore, some people choose to grow plants that can help purify the air.

There are various types of air purification plants, and accordingly, they are characterized by the substances that they purify. First, some plants can remove formaldehyde. Examples include Boston bracken, ivy, and Indian rubber trees. In addition, Gwaneumjuk, McMudong, and Benjamin Rubber Trees are ideal plants for removing ammonia. And the most commonly used plants in everyday life can reduce carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, such as bamboo palm, sansevieria, and anthrium. Finally, allocacia and macoyana are good plants for removing other chemicals. All of these plants can be classified according to absorption capabilities and cultivation methods.

Even though these type of plants are common, people who live in a studio or other small apartment need to take the size and layout of their home into consideration. Therefore, when purchasing air purification plants, it is best to purchase plants that can fit in small and narrow spaces. However, the smaller the plant size, the less effective it is. As a result, more people prefer large plants and think of them as interior props rather than plants that occupy space. As this has become popular, the concept of “plant interior design” has become a familiar image to people. In the end, the number of homes and cafes has increased due to interior design through air purification plants, and the emphasis on naturefriendly and attractive living spaces is drawing more attention from people.

In order to prevent air pollution caused by yellow dust and fine dust, it is important to actively protect our own living spaces. Of course, it is ideal to use air purifiers when possible, but not everyone has the ability to purchase and find space for them. Therefore, it is also a good idea to use air purification plants as small interior props. Plus, many people might not be aware that fine dust is generated when cooking, especially when grilling fish or meat, so it is very helpful to minimize the cooking time, close the cooking lids, and use a fan or other ventilation when cooking. If we make small but meaningful steps toward a cleaner home environment, air pollution can be reduced.
