Over the last two years, most courses have been offered online due to the social distancing guidelines. To take online classes, students have had to use computers for a much longer time than usual. Using a keyboard and computer mouse for a long time increases the risk of wrist problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome. These kinds of diseases are called ‘the chronic disease of modern people’ because they commonly occur. For this reason, wrist diseases are considered trivial and are easily neglected, making them hard to be treated properly. Besides, the treatment is not easy since people always move their wrists in daily life. As prevention is the key to maintaining healthy wrists, ergonomic items are becoming popular. Pharos will introduce three of the most famous pieces of ergonomic computer equipment.

The flat-shaped computer mouse that is generally used puts strain on the hands, wrists, and arms. A natural posture for the palms is to face each other due to the structure of the human body. However, when grabbing the flat mouse, the palm faces the ground, turning the hand and arm 90°. Considering this, the vertical mouse is designed vertically so that the palm faces to the side in a natural pose. The vertical design reduces the strain on the wrist and arm. It takes time to get used to, but once you get used to it, it can be used comfortably.

As well as the flat mouse, a flat keyboard puts strain on the wrist. When using the flat keyboard, the arm is twisted, and every finger must be moved constantly with the hand fixed in a flat position. In this case, every knuckle is overstrained and it leads to the whole hand aching. In contrast, the ergonomic keyboard has curves at a comfortable angle, which releases stress on the wrist and fingers. There is another type of ergonomic keyboard: a separated keyboard. It is a pair of one right-hand keyboard and one left-hand keyboard. When using this product, the shoulders don’t curl inward, helping users to sit up straight.

Another item that helps protect the wrist and maintain good posture is an elbow rest. It is a rack to attach to the bottom of the desk. It supports the arms, making the wrists and shoulders balanced well. It also prevents users from getting too close to the monitor or bending the back, so the upper body can be straightened. Moreover, the angle and height of it can be adjusted manually so that every person can use it comfortably, regardless of their body type.

"When it is impossible to avoid using a computer, using these items can be a smart solution. It is also recommended to do a simple exercise to prevent wrist problems."
