When is the most nervous moment for college students before the semester starts? It is the period of enrollment. It may sound strange that it is a tense moment to apply for a course that you want to take, but for college students, enrolling in courses is an important matter that determines their college life for a semester. During the course application period, some students visit PC rooms that they don’t usually go to. This is because you can miss the lecture you want or the lecture you must take due to a very short time difference. For this reason, college students are forced to engage in fierce competition and sit-ins during the course application period. If you are able to apply for a course you want, you may think it’s the same luck as winning the lottery, but when you fail to apply for a course, you are at a loss. Students have recently applied for the first semester of this year, which has been considered “hell.” We want to find out more about the problem of enrolling in courses, given that many departments have recently been merged into undergraduate departments, and how the problem of enrolling in courses is getting worse.

It is justifiable to limit the number of students to ensure a good learning environment and smooth course progress. However, there are often cases where many students fail to fill the credits they have to take in a semester by excessively limiting the number of students each time, including this semester. It is even common for students to fail to take major courses or take courses that they have to take in order to graduate. In addition, as time goes by, the number of lectures that do not include information on the lecture plan is increasing. As a result, students are undergoing an unreasonable situation in which they have to choose classes that they will take with only basic and limited information, such as the course name and lecture time. Despite paying a fair tuition fee to take the desired courses, information on the lectures, a variety of lectures, and the right to take the desired courses are not all guaranteed.

What is the problem with the enrollment that caused this situation? It was the elimination of the distinction between self-discipline and other departments. Previously, the subjects for enrollment in self-studying and other departments were divided. However, the boundary has been broken, causing other students to take major classes while self-study students cannot. The initial purpose may have been positive to allow students to take various classes regardless of the department, but this has rather negative effects, causing students to suffer a lot. It is a predictable fact that the number of people who want to take classes naturally increases when the distinction between self-studying and other departments disappears. However, Kyonggi University is currently causing many problems as it does not increase the number of classes it offers. Another problem is that there is no system in place for students to apply for major subjects relevant to their year. Some older students may retake classes to improve their grades on the subject. However, even if you apply for a second class, applicants will flock to the class with existing students. Eventually, students will not be able to take courses relevant to their year. As a result, they eventually take a higher-level major course than their year, or take another course and take a major course in the next semester or grade. Therefore, there is a problem that you cannot take classes according to the major curriculum.

There are many problems in terms of the course application system, but the difference in the level of support for each of the two campuses of this school is also a big controversy. Both campuses belong to the same Kyonggi University and students pay tuition equally. Nevertheless, comparing the number of lectures on the Seoul Campus and Suwon Campus, you can see that the lectures on the Suwon Campus are much more diverse and numerous. If you look at the school community, you can see many students who are worried about whether to take classes on the Suwon Campus despite being students on the Seoul Campus due to this problem. However even this is not an easy task. This is because the number of students at the Suwon Campus is limited to a small number of students, so all opening subjects are overpopulated. For these reasons, students in difficult situations are experiencing surprising and sad things, such as buying and selling lectures while exchanging small gifts and such. A similar phenomenon to concert ticketing is occurring in university applications. Students’ difficulties and dissatisfaction with the course application system continue to arise. However, because schools are not fundamentally solving problems, students are forced to feel more frustrated. It is difficult to accommodate all the needs of the students. However universities must at least guarantee students the right to happiness. Not only for the current students but also for the new students who will enter Kyonggi University with dreams, the school should listen to the students’ difficulties as soon as possible. ‘Signing up for classes should no longer come as pain and distress to students.’ To solve this problem, Kyonggi University should prepare and implement countermeasures to overcome the current system of enrollment.
