In June of last year, Kim In-kyu started his new post as the president of Kyonggi University. After being selected, various projects are currently proceeding under his direction, and they include a second university evaluation and the specialization of the university. You'll answer some of your questions by listening to the president's thoughts and learning about the progress of those projects. Also, hoping for more communication between the school and students with a new student council, we'll introduce the main issues of the projects.

First, tell us briefly about your first feelings and your current mood.

I was surprised because Suwon Campus was better than I thought. After my appointment, I felt the faculty members were not confident. However, I understand the reason for that because it has been the customary attitude for more than 10 years. Therefore, the expression “new start” was used to celebrate the school’s anniversary, and it indicated that we would like to raise our school up from underwater to the surface. My goal is to raise Kyonggi University to the upper reaches of the river in the future.

It has been revealed that you are preparing to attract investment and make the school’s own business more profitable to secure financial soundness; so, how’s that going?

Kyonggi University is in a troubling situation, so we are asking for investment from major companies based on our potential. I also donate 2 million won per month as the president. In early February, I’ll announce about 30 million won in scholarships, which have collected through my efforts. Additionally, we also plan to build an international exchange center with China’s “Hwashin Energy Group”, although our school hasn’t had facilities investment by companies unlike other universities.

You would like to set up Seoul Campus as a “Hallyu” campus and Suwon Campus as a 4th Industrial Revolution campus. What are your efforts and achievements so far?

Now, Seoul Campus is planning to build a Korean Wave Culture graduate school, so K-pop and K-culture management majors were newly established in the arts schools. Suwon Campus runs an intelligent fusion manufacturing research center. Based on this project, it was selected as a public project aimed at constructing an ecosystem of blockchains. This project will help create jobs, and it will make our school a leader in the 4th industrial revolution.

What are your thoughts on positive or slightly disappointing aspects of your performance as president in 2017?

Regarding the second university evaluation that will be held this year, faculty members seemed depressed about whether or not we could become an autonomous improvement university. However, I led them to believe we have to try to do what can be done. At first, many people thought that we would never become an autonomous improvement university, but now more people believe we can. That sounds like a big change to me.

What are the preparations and prospects for the second university evaluation?

We have already reduced the number of students by seven percent as a result of the first evaluation. If the result of the second evaluation is bad, the number of students may be cut by 20 to 30 percent. Only by being among the top 60 percent of universities, can we survive. When I first came to the school, Kyonggi University was among the top 80 percent objectively. However, through various efforts, I think Kyonggi University is among the top 70 percent now. For better results, the research committee and university administration are preparing many things.

How do you plan to communicate with the newly elected RE:BORN student council?

A few days ago, I met with the president and vice president of the RE:BORN student council. At that time, we talked about students’ suggestions. Some of the suggestions were possible, but some would be hard to implement. However, I think if we try together, many hard to implement ideas can be made possible, so I’m planning to meet and communicate with them frequently. I’ll listen to students’ suggestions as much as possible.

If students have different opinions about your school management plan, how would you respond to their opinions?

Currently, students are experiencing inconvenience when applying to attend a lecture or other aspects of university life due to the university reform process. Regarding this, the ministry is discussing corrective measures. About the recent issue of flexibility in choice of major, the results of the student survey showed that the students were in favor of this change. Therefore, we are striving to introduce it. I’ll communicate with the student council to try to reflect students’ opinions.

Do you have something to say to Kyonggi University students?

The privilege of young university students is they can have their own dreams and visions. Instead of imitating others, you should dream your own dream. Although this can be hard, I hope Kyonggi University students will take advantage of this privilege and try to dream their own dreams. Even if you fail, it is meaningful as a challenge.

Through this interview, we learned that the president of our university planned to do many things for the school after he was appointed. We hope that he continuously works hard and we want to see a lot of communication between the school and students beginning this year. Also, we hope that students will pay a lot of attention to the efforts being made by the school administration and work together to develop our school.
