Internationalization is one of the key factors in the development of university education. Internationalization requires international exchanges. This is because it plays a big role in the internationalization of education, research and management of schools. It also affects the internationalization of students’ educational experiences. In Kyonggi University, the Office of International Affairs is in charge of internationalization-related businesses. They focus on helping Korean students improve their foreign language skills, deepening their understanding of world culture, and setting conditions for foreign students to get a good education. From now on, let’s find out more about their work.

1. International Exchange Strategy Planning and Concluding Sister University Agreements with Major Universities Abroad.

The Office of International Affairs gathers and analyzes information about international education and plans strategies about it. Plus, they conclude sister university agreements with universities abroad. Based on such agreements, they conduct international exchanges such as dispatching students, joint research and academic events, and school personnel exchanges.

2. The Dispatch and Invitation of Exchange Students

Basically, dispatching students to sister universities is possible when this school also invites an appropriate number of sister university students on a reciprocal basis. Therefore, they do many things to facilitate the invitation of sister university students. Also, they help students go through the preparation procedures for dispatching the students to sister universities abroad and support them to study for a semester or a year. Recently, they created the International Exchange Scholarship for students who feel burdened by the cost. This scholarship can be provided to students with certain linguistic ability requirements.

3. Support Short-Term Training

The short-term training programs abroad such as language study, seasonal semesters, and internships play important roles in building students’ global competence. Therefore, the Office of International Affairs gathers information about useful but cost-effective short-term training programs and informs students about them. Furthermore, they help students register for them and award a scholarship to students with certain linguistic ability requirements.

4. Improving Foreign Language Education and Widening the Native Language Lecture

The Office of International Affairs carries out special foreign language education and assessment for students who don’t satisfy the requirements for a foreign language graduation. It is to expand the curriculum of this university. It is part of an effort to establish a fusion major in East Asian studies with classes taught in English, which has been led by the Office of International Affairs since 2014.

5. Attract and Support Foreign Students

At Kyonggi University, a little more than 1,000 foreign students, including international education students, graduate students and exchange students, are currently studying in addition to regular undergraduates. The Office of International Affairs has set the goal of bringing in 2,000 foreign students over the next four to five years for the internationalization of our university and continued growth. It is a system that promotes foreign students’ support through cooperation with foreign education institutions, such as high schools, overseas study support agencies and universities. In addition, they implemented a special admission process for foreign students. The system provides learning and living benefits by consulting with foreign students such as expanding the dormitory for foreign students and planning mandatory and elective courses for foreign students. Korean language studies are especially important. Foreign students want to learn Korean to understand the Korean wave or Korean society and culture. In particular, many students from developing countries want to work for Korean companies after they learn the Korean language and complete university courses. Accordingly, the Office of International Affairs offers Korean

language courses in each semester and during the summer and winter vacation periods starting with the basics.

If the past decade has been a time in which globalization took root at Kyonggi University, the next 10 years, will be a time of its flowering. Therefore, Kyonggi University in 2030 will help to develop “citizens of the world” and will have become a “university that is globally centered.” Then Korean and foreign students will study together naturally, with little awareness of each other’s differences. With regard to the purpose and content of the lectures, they will be conducted in Korean, English, or any foreign language, and the choice of lecture language will be made flexibly according to the demand for of the course. From now on, we hope more students will be interested in exchange student programs and exchanges with foreign students.
